(OAHI)

What is an historical interpreter?

"An interpreter's task is to reveal meaning and relationships through the use of original objects, by first hand experiences and by illustrative media, rather than simply to communicate factual information."

The OAHI Organization

Organized as an association under bylaws in 1980, OAHI operates in collaboration with the City of Ventura to provide volunteer docent service to Olivas Park.

Our Mission

To interpret and preserve the history and heritage of the Olivas family and Rancho San Miguel as part of the Rancho Period of California History.

Some of Our Activities

¤ Provide interpretive tours of the park
¤ Maintain the displays in the adobe home
¤ Maintain the displays in the exhibit hall
¤ Maintain the gift shop
¤ Maintain the research library
¤ Maintain the herb garden
¤ Conduct school outreach programs
¤ Participate in events held at the Adobe

Be an Olivas Adobe Historical Interpreter

Active member commitment - 96 hours per year
Associate member commitment - 40 hours per year

Training class, Sundays, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

OAHI Training Program for New Docents

Training Topics:

History of the Adobe House and Park Grounds
History of the OAHI Organization
History of the California Rancho Period
History of the Olivas Family
OAHI Activities: House Tours, Gift Shop, Library, Herb Garden, School Outreach, Various Events and Committee Activities

Training Method:

Scheduled classes. Training consists of reading assignments, video, lecture and hands-on activities.
All training takes place at Olivas Park.

Training Dates:

February: Orientation - 2/21 & 28, History - 3/7 & 14, House Tours - 3/21 & 28
April: Orientation - 4/11 & 18, History - 4/25 & 5/2, House Tours - 5/0 & (Saturday) 15
July: Orientation - 7/11 & 18, History - 7/25 & 8/1, House Tours - 8/8 & 15
September: Orientation - 9/12 & 19, History - 10/3 & 10, House Tours - 10/17 & 24

Cost:

$25.00 covers training and annual dues. The student also must acquire a Rancho Period costume at his/her own expense.
